Welcome, new RSG NZ General Manager, Faan Basson!

Get to Know Faan

Born and raised in the rural town of Malmesbury near Cape Town, South Africa, on a family dairy farm with a proud legacy in Holstein stud breeding, premium wines, and a Dohne Merino Stud, Faan Basson developed a deep passion for agriculture early on. He earned an Agricultural Diploma from Elsenburg (Stellenbosch University), specialising in Winemaking and Dairy Farm Management. After university, he played professional rugby before returning to agriculture through roles in agrochemicals and bovine vaccines.

In 2011, Faan returned to manage his family farm, pursuing his goal of becoming a master dairyman. He married Erika, a veterinary surgeon, in 2016, and they have two wonderful children. In 2019, the family immigrated to New Zealand, where they happily call home.

Since arriving in NZ, Faan has worked as a rural bank manager and a business manager for a private equity agribusiness before joining RSG NZ. During this time, he completed his Executive MBA at Massey University.

Faan brings resilient leadership, a commitment to excellence, and over 15 years of experience across agriculture, finance, technology, stakeholder partnerships, and innovation. He believes deeply in people and enjoys setting teams up for success.

Outside of work, he is passionate about leadership development, sport, and advancing technology in agriculture.

Empty Doesn’t Mean the End

Produce Embryos from Empty Cows

As many farms begin pregnancy scanning, some valuable cows will unfortunately come up empty. However, this doesn’t have to be a setback.

The RSG NZ team can perform TVR and IVP on cows while they are still in milk, allowing you to continue capturing their genetic potential. A number of breeders are already taking advantage of this opportunity with great success. Likewise, commercial herd cows that scan open are strong candidates to serve as recipients moving forward, whether they are in the last stage of lactation or maintained as dry cows.

If you would like to explore this option, please get in touch with our team.
