Peak Calving Season Tips

We’re now in the thick of the New Zealand calving season, and it’s fantastic to see last year’s strong RSG / Trans Ova produced embryos translating into happy, healthy calves on the ground.

One key reminder: when each embryo was implanted, it was already 7 days old. Factor the age of the embryo into your due dates. The chart shows average gestation length by breed — remember to subtract 7 days from the standard due date to account for the embryo’s age at transfer.

A few tips as we move through peak calving:

  • Check recipient cows at least twice daily, especially overnight during cold snaps.
  • Prioritise colostrum — quality, quantity, and timing (within 6 hours) drive calf survival and lifetime performance.
  • Tag, weigh, and record every ET calf promptly for full traceability back to donor and sire.
  • Call your local veterinary team early if you suspect dystocia — early intervention is almost always the better outcome.

Disclaimer: The gestation lengths and due dates provided in this newsletter are offered as general guidance and recommendations only. They are based on breed averages and are intended to assist with planning. RSG NZ is not providing veterinary, animal health, or professional advice. Actual gestation length and calving dates vary between individual animals. Producers should confirm timing, due dates, and any animal health decisions with their own veterinarian or animal health team.

RSG NZ operates as a Trans Ova affiliate laboratory, with a state-of-the-art IVF facility based in Hamilton. Since opening in 2025, we’ve been delivering world-class reproductive technologies — MOET, TVR, AI, IVF, and ET — to producers across New Zealand.

RSG Strawberry Fields — Facility Investment Continues

Capital-expenditure projects continue at our Strawberry Fields location, with ongoing investment in the facilities. Our most recent upgrade was completed to the bull housing facilities, and it’s been exciting to see the bulls living their best lives in their updated home.

Quality semen starts with quality animal husbandry. We look forward to sharing more on these facility updates over the coming twelve months.

From Lorenzo’s Desk

Lorenzo Frers | RSG Head of Laboratories

This month’s topic: SPERM MORPHOLOGY

What it means and why it matters for getting cows in calf.

Morph is one of five basic lab tests every sperm sample must pass before extension and freezing.

Morph assesses whether a live, forward-swimming sperm cell can fertilise the egg and support a healthy embryo.

For every RSG bull/batch ejaculate, we fix an extended sample and examine it at 1,000× magnification.

Normal sperm cells are shown on the left; on the right, only 2 of 6 cells are normal.

Over the past five years, we refined our morphology testing through the University of Queensland (AU), regarded as the global gold standard. To qualify, we acquired a state-of-the-art DIC microscope and assessed 1,000 sperm cells with 90% accuracy—becoming New Zealand’s only certified sperm morphologist.

Regardless of motility, every RSG semen batch receives a recorded morphology assessment of 100 cells across seven categories and subcategories before moving to extension and freezing.

Meet Daniel Hannibal

NZ Boar Stud

Welcome to the team!

Daniel is a RSG Farm Technician on the Farm Centre Team, bringing with him the kind of experience that only comes from two decades of farming and 15 years of building just about anything that needs building. With “lots” of education and even more skills, Daniel is known for his open, easy‑going nature the – kind of guy who can fix a fence, calm a cow, and diffuse a stressful day with a single comment.

Outside of work, Daniel divides his time between family life, running a Brahman stud, and managing lease farms – proving that when he’s not busy at work, he’s… still busy.

Stock Take Update

The Despatch team is in the final stages of completing a comprehensive stock take of inventory at RSG NZ as we prepare to launch the RSG Genetics Inventory Platform.

This major undertaking has involved counting and verifying semen, vitrified embryos, and frozen embryo straws stored across more than 100 tanks. Our inventory spans multiple decades and includes valuable genetics from bovine, equine, caprine, ovine, and canine species.

With the stock take now nearly complete, we are one step closer to launching the RSG Genetics Inventory Platform. This work will ensure accurate inventory records and provide clients with a seamless, reliable experience when accessing and managing their genetics.

New Genetic Inventory Platform Coming Soon

RSG NZ is excited to announce that a new genetic inventory platform is coming soon.

This platform will offer greater transparency of your semen & embryo inventory, simplified receipt & despatch process, improved stock management & tracking, and a more streamlined user-friendly experience.
