Peak Calving Season Tips
We’re now in the thick of the New Zealand calving season, and it’s fantastic to see last year’s strong RSG / Trans Ova produced embryos translating into happy, healthy calves on the ground.
One key reminder: when each embryo was implanted, it was already 7 days old. Factor the age of the embryo into your due dates. The chart shows average gestation length by breed — remember to subtract 7 days from the standard due date to account for the embryo’s age at transfer.
A few tips as we move through peak calving:
- Check recipient cows at least twice daily, especially overnight during cold snaps.
- Prioritise colostrum — quality, quantity, and timing (within 6 hours) drive calf survival and lifetime performance.
- Tag, weigh, and record every ET calf promptly for full traceability back to donor and sire.
- Call your local veterinary team early if you suspect dystocia — early intervention is almost always the better outcome.

Actual gestation length and calving dates vary between individual animals. Producers should confirm timing, due dates, and any animal health decisions with their own veterinarian or animal health team.
