Celebrating Alan Powell’s Retirement

Alan

After years of outstanding service to the NZ farming community, Alan Powell is retiring from his role at RSG at the end of October. Alan has spent 45 years in the dairy industry, bringing a wealth of experience and expertise to his role at RSG.

He began working with IVF technology in 1996, incorporating TVR into his breeding programs. His success in the field is remarkable—one cow from his program has produced over 110 offspring on the ground, a testament to his skill in genetic selection and reproduction management. Alan’s breeding work has also contributed six bulls to the industry, with three at CRV and three at LIC.

Outside of work, Alan and his wife Linda, who have been married 20 years, have six adult children and 13 grandchildren. In retirement, Alan isn’t slowing down—he’s moving into a development project and looks forward to spending more time with his grandchildren while staying actively involved in the industry he’s dedicated his career to.

We wish him all the best in his retirement and hope he enjoys this new chapter.

Please join us in congratulating Alan on a remarkable career!

From the GM’s Desk

Julie Premo

As we move through October, I’m excited to share several important updates and initiatives that highlight RSG’s continued growth and commitment to our clients.

Peak Season in Full Swing

Our peak implanting season is now well underway, and the team has been working diligently across all regions. We’re seeing strong activity and excellent partnerships from our clients, and we look forward to reporting on the success of these implants in the coming months. The early indicators are very positive, and we’re confident this season will demonstrate the quality and reliability that RSG is known for globally.

RSG’s Independent Path Forward

As many of you know, RSG is now operating as its own independent business. We’ve successfully moved beyond what clients knew with ABS, and this independence has allowed us to focus entirely on delivering the best possible service and results for our clients. We believe the benefits of working with an independent, client-focused operation like RSG are clear. Our commitment is to you, our clients, and to the success of your breeding programs.

Looking Ahead: Client Engagement

We value your feedback and partnership, which is why we’ll be launching our client survey in November. This is your opportunity to share your experiences, suggestions, and ideas for how we can continue to improve our services. Your input is essential to our ongoing development and your success.

In January, we’ll be scheduling contract assessments to ensure we’re meeting your needs and to discuss plans for the year ahead. I will be coordinating farm visits for both the North and South Islands in the coming months, so watch for an email to schedule a time that works for you.

Save the Date: RSG Open House

Finally, I’m pleased to announce that we’re planning an RSG Open House for the early fall of 2026. This will be an excellent opportunity to see our facilities, meet the team, learn about our latest developments, and connect with fellow clients. More details will follow in the new year.

Thank you for your continued trust in RSG. We’re excited about what lies ahead and look forward to achieving great results together.

Onward and Upward

Beef & Lamb Publishes Article on Drenching Calves

beef and lamb

With a surge in calf numbers this season, Wormwise vet Mary Bowron offers clear guidance on when to start drenching young stock. The key takeaway — don’t drench until it’s needed. Calves must have a functioning rumen and be grazing for three to four weeks before worms become an issue.

Producers are encouraged to use faecal egg counts (FECs) to decide the right timing and to check drench effectiveness ten days post-treatment. Poor results could signal resistant parasites or high pasture contamination. Bowron also reminds farmers that coccidiosis can mimic worm issues and should not be overlooked.

Rotational grazing, maintaining pasture covers above 1800 kg DM/ha, and providing clean grazing areas can all help reduce parasite exposure and improve growth.
